The History of Cysteamine: From a 1966 Observation to Modern Pigment Creams

Cysteamine's skincare story starts in a laboratory, with fish.
A 1966 paper studied depigmenting agents in black goldfish. A 1968 paper carried the work into guinea pig skin. Both were animal studies, and animal findings don't prove anything about a finished cream on a human face. Controlled human pigment trials came decades later.
Cysteamine in the body
It's a small sulfur compound called a thiol, which means it carries a reactive sulfur group. That group explains both its medical uses and why it took so long to put into a jar.
Long before pigment creams, cysteamine became a prescription pill. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a swallowed version, cysteamine bitartrate, sold as Cystagon, in August 1994. Its approved use is nephropathic cystinosis, a rare kidney disease. The agency had flagged it as a rare-disease drug three years earlier.
One point matters more than the rest. That approval covers oral capsules for a kidney condition. It says nothing about skin, and it does not validate putting cysteamine on your face.
The 1966 goldfish paper
In 1966, Chavin and Schlesinger published a paper in the science journal Die Naturwissenschaften titled "Some potent melanin depigmentary agents in the black goldfish."
The public record supports this much. The paper concerned depigmenting agents in black goldfish. PubMed files it under cysteamine and its chemical family.
That's as far as I'll go with it. No abstract is publicly readable and the full text sits behind a paywall, so I'm not going to attribute any specific finding, dose, or result to a paper I can't read. What's verifiable is the year, the authors, the journal, the animal, and the title. It was a fish study.
What 1968 added
In 1968, Frenk, Pathak, Szabo, and Fitzpatrick published "Selective action of mercaptoethylamines on melanocytes in mammalian skin: experimental depigmentation" in Archives of Dermatology. Melanocytes are the cells that make pigment, and cysteamine belongs to the mercaptoethylamine family named in that title.
Per the title and the indexing, it was a depigmentation study in guinea pigs. Moving from fish to mammal skin was a real step toward human biology. It still isn't human biology. Like the 1966 paper, it has no readable public abstract, so I'm claiming no results from it either.
Animal experiments can raise a good question. They can't answer whether a cream works on a human face.
Why the cream took decades
The sources cited here document animal pigment observations in 1966 and 1968, an oral cystinosis drug approval in 1994, and later topical pigment studies. They do not establish why topical development followed that timeline.
An early randomized human trial
A key early randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled human trial was published in the British Journal of Dermatology in 2015.
Fifty people with melasma took part. Twenty-five used a 5% cysteamine cream, 25 used a placebo, applied once a day at bedtime. Treatment ran four months with checks at the start, at two months, and at four.
Researchers tracked how much darker the patches were than surrounding skin. At the start: 75.2 with cysteamine, 68.9 with placebo. At two months: 39.7 against 63.8. At four months: 26.2 against 60.7. Final melasma scores were 7.2 against 11.6.
Two gaps. The linked PubMed abstract does not report baseline Melasma Area and Severity Index (MASI) scores, so it does not support a percentage-improvement calculation for MASI. The abstract also reports no side-effect data. One author was affiliated with Scientis Pharma, a Geneva pharmaceutical company.
That trial tested a 5% cream that wasn't ours. Illuminate Rx lists 10% cysteamine, and none of the studies cited here evaluated Illuminate Rx.
What history does and doesn't tell you
The 1966 and 1968 papers were animal work in fish and guinea pigs, and neither has a readable public abstract, so nobody should be quoting specific findings from either.
The 1994 FDA approval covers a swallowed capsule for a rare kidney disease. It approves no skin cream.
And a research timeline, however long, is not evidence about any particular formula. History explains how we got here. It doesn't prove what's in your jar.
